MIR – Russisch voor vrede – is één van
de vier schepen die gebouwd zijn in het Poolse Gdansk op de scheepswerf
van de voormalige Sovjet-Unie. Het schip wordt gebruikt door het Marine
Engineering College of St. Petersburg en wordt naast zeiltrainingen ingezet
voor opleidingen in maritieme wetenschappen en oceanografie.
De Mir staat bekend als een van de snelste windjammers
in haar klasse en heeft vele overwinningen op haar naam staan.De Mir is
uitgerust met een volledige ziekenzaal, met chirurg. Het schip heeft geen
lieren of winches aan boord, er wordt dus traditioneel gezeild.

MIR("Peace") is the
third ship of one construction series of overall six ships of the M108-class,
also called "MIR"-class, which have been built in the 80-s at the Lenin
shipyard in Gdansk/Poland.
The first of this series is the sister ship built for
the Polish navy: -Dar MIodziezy.
From the very beginning the ship was designed and built as
a training ship intended for shipboard training of navigating cadets and
taking part in tall ships` races. At different times she carried on board
from 70 to 140 cadets not only from the SMA but also from other maritime
educational institutions of both the USSR (later Russia) and foreign countries
( e.g. Great Britain). Foreign cadets and trainees stay on board of the
"Mir" undoubtedly contributed to promote better understanding and friendship
between young people of various countries.
