skûtsje
Initially rapidly sailing wooden tjalkje of about 12 m long
from Friesland. Build in the middle of 19th century, developed especially
for the transport of terpmodder concerning shallow and narrow water. As
from 1889 (Barkmeijer, Sneek) they have been built in iron. The last skûtsje
was build in 1933, at Draaisma Franeker. Since 1910 had these iron skûtsjes
predominated in sails for freight ships. Skutsjesilen is the name
used for that races held in the summer in Friesland. Present the name is
used for freighttjalken up to 60 barrels.
